Subject: [CLIMLIST] Vacancy: Tenure-Track Faculty Position at St. Francis
Xavier University (Canada)

Origin: Hugo Beltrami <[email protected]>

Climate and Environment Program or Relevant Department

Tenure-Track Position in Climate Sciences

St. Francis Xavier University invites applications for a probationary
Tenure Track appointment in Climate/Environment Sciences at the rank of
Assistant Professor commencing July 1, 2017. Salary will be commensurate
with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in the area of Climate
Sciences or related discipline and must show strong inter-disciplinary
potentials in research and teaching. Experience with climate models and a
demonstrated research excellence through a record of publications in
high-impact peer reviewed journals, will be considered an asset. The
candidate will be expected to teach cross disciplinary courses in a new
inter-disciplinary undergraduate Climate and Environment program as well as
to conduct externally funded research in the area of Climate Dynamics.

Climate change is now recognized in the science and policy communities as a
risk that needs to be addressed through adaptation as well as through
mitigation. Impacts of a changing climate are already evident in every
region of the world. These impacts will be exacerbated in the future with
significant implications for communities, industry, infrastructure and
ecosystems. The climate emergency we face today requires that climate
scientists develop models and strategies for solving practical problems
using multidisciplinary approaches. Specifically, there is a need to
develop operational climate prediction tools specific to one or more
problems, so climate researchers can have reliable information to provide
sound policy advice on mitigation and impact prevention strategies. Global
and regional climate models, the same tools used to study physical
phenomena, can produce results with practical applications.

The successful candidate will complement existing expertise in global and
regional climate modelling, paleoclimate and biogeosciences, and is
expected to interact with undergraduate, MSc and PhD students in the
Climate Dynamics group at St. Francis Xavier University led by the Canada
Research Chair in Climate Dynamics and will participate in the activities
of the Climate and Environmental Sciences Institute (under development).
StFX also offers potential collaborations with crossover into different
clusters within StFX’s Strategic Research Plan. Collaboration with social
scientists would be natural within this framework. Climate and
Environmental Sciences at StFX is widely recognized for the high quality of
both its research and teaching. A Master of Science program is available
while PhD students can be supervised at the StFX campus through an
inter-university agreement with Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement
of teaching and research interests and the names, addresses and telephone
numbers of three referees. Applicants are encouraged to submit their
application material by email to:

Dr. Petra Hauf
Dean of Science
St. Francis Xavier University
PO Box 5000, Antigonish, NS B2G 2W5 Canada
Email: [email protected]

The review of applications will begin on February 1, 2017 and will continue
until this position is filled. This position is subject to final budgetary
approval.

Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Preference will be
given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If you are selected for
an interview for the advertised position, proof of Canadian citizenship or
permanent residency is required. StFX respects diversity and welcomes
applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal
persons, persons with disabilities and members of sexual minority groups.
