Dear Bob:

OASIS montaj v4.3 has new and enhanced applications
for geophysicists, geochemists and geologists -- with
shared capabilities for all disciplines via the
OASIS montaj DPA core. There are also changes for
programmers (i.e. GX Developer). Some highlights follow
- hope this isn't too detailed ...

Take care,
Greg

v4.3 SHARED CAPABILITIES (OASIS montaj core)

* CAD Tools for Creating Onscreen Interpretations
(i.e. polygonizing, patterned lines and fills, clipboard,
"snap-to-lines", etc.). Also gives the ability to
arrange layering order using a new View / Group Manager,
customize line attributes including geologic faults
and other patterns, apply smooth line rendering, and
apply automated pattern colouring to one or more
"geologic" polygons using an Eye dropper.

* Changed Projection Wizard. Projection Interface has been
  simplified.

* Memory Management and Performance (improvements for
large processes, database and grid compression, and
  MAGMAP performance improvements).

* Third-Party Integration including clipboard support for cutting
and pasting text, bitmap and vector graphics (Windows
metafile and encapsulated postscript) to/from databases
  and/or maps.

* GIS Interfaces. Om now provides tools to import and work with
data from both main GIS systems including ArcView (v4.3) and
MapInfo (v4.2). ArcView support includes tools for exporting
Om maps to ArcView shape files, importing shape files, working
with ArcView binary raster grids, and exporting to GEOTIFF
  files.

* Map Export, Plot Profiles to a Map, CGM Plotting, GEOTIFF and
Generalized ASCII Grid Import. Export maps to image formats using
either Screen or Grid resolution. Set up single profiles in the
Profile window to the desired output scale and plot them to a map).
Support for CGM output and GEOTIFF read / write (previously only a
  read capability).

* E-Maps. Select a map and click on the right mouse button to
access an option for emailing the map. A receiving user can
double-click on the map and automatically start OASIS montaj
  and open the map.

* New Mapping Capabilities. New Lat / Long <--> Local X, Y GX
enables users to specify a known location at X, Y location
and a grid rotation angle, and converts Lat / Long to local
coordinates and back. Another new GX is NEWMAPLL GX
which creates Lat / Long basemaps based on a lat /
long range. This GX also automatically sets up curved clip
window and positions the map centre.

* Menu Simplification. New menu layout organizes capabilities
related to data, profiles, maps, etc. in logical order. Also
able to selectively add and remove menus.

* Database Management and Handling. Search and replace, sort by
two channels, array channels and basic windowing tools,
metadata (i.e. workspace comments), statistics summary reporting
of a selected list of channels of all selected lines in the
current database, and the ability to merge databases.

* Internet Aware Technology. Download and install service packs
from Help Menu, access www.geosoft.com, email to Tech Support
and automatic generation of email for abort logs.

* Online Documentation. GX Help is completely re-written with
images and expanded description where possible. New PDF manuals
and upgraded manuals reflect interface and functionality changes.
The searchable Online Help has also been re-designed for easier
navigation and almost every topic in the system has been enhanced.

SPECIALIZED CAPABILITIES FOR GEOPHYSICISTS

* New Gravity Processing and Terrain Correction application. This
system provides capabilities required to process and reduce
gravity data from conventional ground surveys. It has a special
optimized terrain reduction algorithm that delivers accuracy and
performance for even very large data sets.

Processing capabilities include the ability to specify project
information, perform base station corrections, working with
calibration data, importing with X and Y location data for data
merging, applying drift corrections including atmospheric tide
corrections, processing repeats and calculating Free Air and
  Bouguer anomaly values.

Terrain correction capabilities include import of a Digital
Elevation Model (DEM) or gridded elevation data set, calculation
of regional corretions and calculation of local corrections. For
users interested in Terrain corrections, your Geosoft representative
will have an abstract describing the method available at release
  time.

* New IP Processing and Presentation application. This system
provides capabilities required to transform Time- and
Frequency-domain data into professional presentations for
  interpretation and decision-making.

Processing capabilities include processing time-domain and
frequency-domain from various survey configurations, handling
different IP file types and instrument dump formats, reducing
raw IP data, and performing interactive quality control using
  a new QC tool.

Presentation capabilities include adding topographic information
and plotting topography-adjusted pseudosections (not a modeled
correction), plotting values in pseudosection format, and
plotting stacked pseduosections (i.e. line by line, offset
  pseudosections).

* New Trend Enhanced Gridding utility. A traditional problem in
gridding geophysical data is the aliasing problem that occurs
due to the presence of more samples along the lines than across
them. This leads to obvious effects including "beads" or
"ellipsoidal beads" between lines in gridded data. There are
various solutions to these problems such as filtering or
gridding along trend directions but these can reduce
geologic signal or may be ineffective for local trends.

Geosoft's new algorithm is designed to provide a solution that
preserves the character of local trends while eliminating
aliasing effects. The utility processes a grid using various
parameters (including trend direction, line separation, etc.) and
extracts trend lines to a database for interactive manipulation.
When ready, the user re-grids the data based on the resulting
  optimized trend lines.

* Upgraded Radiometrics Processing application with 256 Channel
  Handling and Windowing.

Specific capabilites include the ability to import 256 channel
data into an "array" channel and window full spectrum data to
create channels for K, U, Th and TC. The user then implements
the standard processing sequence including deadtime / livetime
and altitude corrections, removing background contributions,
removing spectral overlapping and height attenuation, and
converting data to apparent radioelement concentrations and
ratios. The data can then be presented in OASIS montaj.

* Specialized capabilities in Om core. A short list includes
a Grid Edge GX that draws the edges of a grid or creates a
polygon file from the edges, 1D-FFT now in user's coordinate
space (instead of only fiducials), Grid Info GX that provides
the ability to change a grid header in a single GX
(i.e. eliminates GRIDHEAD GX), and many more that we will
  summarize for release.

SPECIALIZED CAPABILITIES FOR GEOCHEMISTS

Geosoft has made major enhancements to its CHIMERA Exploration
Geochemistry application. Areas of enhancement include
data management, quality control, geochemical utilities,
mapping, analysis tools and multivariate analysis, and
Principle Components analysis, synthesis and mapping.

Highlights include a new generation of interactive tools
such as interactive standards and duplicate plotting,
correlation coefficient, dynamic display of scatterplots
from correlation coefficient window, and multiple scatterplot
display. Menus have also been streamlined for easier use
and expanded symbol plotting and map digitization added.

SPECIALIZED CAPABILITIES FOR GEOLOGISTS

CAD Tools are an important highlight for geologists -- enabling
one-stop integration of multi-disciplinary data and information,
and creation of interpretation maps for decision-making.

Other enhancements include an extended series of capabilities
for the WHOLEPLOT Drillhole Data Plotting and Presentation
application. Changes are designed to make this application
work more seamlessly in OASIS montaj (with Geosoft or user-
selected fonts, fill patterns, change of section origin
definition, flexible specification of map width and height,
improved default scaling and expanded gridding options).

Documentation has been re-written to simplify
terminology, streamline plotting instructions, and
provide a more complete description of processing and
presentation capabilities.

v4.3 GX DEVELOPER TOOLKIT AND THIRD-PARTY SUPPORT

Note that more technical information about the following
will be provided at a later date.

* New capabilities. The GX Developer toolkit has approximately
doubled based on the new functions implemented in v4.3.

* Upgraded documentation. The manual has been almost
completely rewritten with new conceptual material and
  examples.

* Public Domain Application Programming Interface. Database
access is moving to the public domain and there is a new
  GDB API.

Greg

Some information about what new applications and capabilities are to be
provided in V4.3 would be good for a start! Or this information only for
beta testers?
