Marc,

Both the bugs you reported were logged into our tracking system when you
first reported them to me a week or so ago. My concern with setting up a
list of bugs or a list potential bugs is that they will not get reported to,
or logged into, the Geosoft Bug Tracking Software.

Let me briefly explain what happens on our end. As bugs get reported either
to us here in Toronto or to our support people worldwide, we first try to
duplicate, verify and understand exactly what the bug is. Then we log the
bug into our Bug Tracking Software. The bug gets it's own unique bug number
and call/incident reference number. Information about the problem,
associated files, and who reported the bug are also contained within the
call/incident report. One other key piece of information is the severity of
the bug. This information allows R&D the opportunity to duplicate the bug,
evaluate it, weigh the severity and then fix the bug in due course.

All the support people worldwide have access to this information, as well as
any work-around for a given bug. Please contact them for any information on
existing bugs, potential bugs or bug status. We would be happy to help.

Please report all bugs to your local Technical Support Representative. This
will ensure that a bug gets placed into our system. While I cannot guarantee
when we will fix a bug, at least the bug is in our tracking system and will
be dealt with.

We are continuing to work on making an on-line searchable database available
on the web for resolving problems and viewing bugs. There are still a number
of hurdles we must negotiate before this will be completed.

Hello all,

I would like to add my 2 cents to the discussion on the new service pack.
There are a couple of other bugs in there which haven't been mentioned so
far and were quite serious for me.

The first one affects users who operate with all error messages and warnings
turned on. This is probably most gx developers I suppose. Script files which
contain gxs that generate warnings will crash at the warning. That is, if a
gx ends with a "such and such ended and left 2 locks on the database"
warning, which are quite common, even among geosoft's gxs, the script will
abort. The solution is simple, turn the warnings off.

Another bug which affects probably even fewer users is with regard to
splitting lines. If you create a new line by splitting, the new line will go
to the beginning of the line list, regardless of its number.

These two bugs probably don't affect many people, but I mention them here
because I would like to see the creation of a known bug list somewhere.
Sometimes just knowing that something is a bug, and not finger trouble, can
save a lot of time. I envision a setup whereby people would submit possible
bugs to this list, and after they were confirmed by other users they would
be added to the bug list, along with workarounds. That way everyone would be
up to date and there would be a reference for users to consult. I would be
willing to host it on my web site and maintain it, if someone else is
willing to set it up. Any takers?

cheers

Marc Pelletier
