GEONET,
We now know more about the problem displaying SP2 created grids in SP3.
Symptom:
Grids created in SP2 do not appear to register correctly on maps displayed
in SP3.
Conditions:
1. Grids were created in SP2.
2. Default user units at the time maps were created are not metres (often ft
or ftUS).
3. No map projection was attached to the coordinate systems.
Cause:
This is caused by a bug in SP2 that did not convert grid units to the view
units when displaying a grid in a view with a different unit. This would
only occur if the grid AND view did not have a defined projected coordinate
system, and if the grid units were in fact wrong.
The grids in question were created either before specifying the correct user
units, or by some other application that used default units (metres). As a
result, the units of the grid were assumed to be meters. In SP2, displaying
such grids in a view in a different unit would not convert the units, which
is a bug, and this bug was fixed in SP3. However, the bug in SP2 caused the
user to think that everything was fine with their grids because the grids
appear to register correctly on their maps.
Workaround:
Check that the units of the grids being displayed and the units of the data
view are correct (they do not need to be the same, just correct). If you
have an e-map, you must un-pack the map (select "Map/Unpack map files") to
check or change the grid units (use "Grid/Grid info...").
Symptom:
A map created in SP2 using user units of "ft" is displayed in SP3 with user
units (those displayed in the bottom right corner) as "m".
Cause:
A bug in SP2 (and earlier) created maps with correct view units (in this
case "ft"), but with a default user coordinates system ("m"). SP2 and
earlier incorrectly displayed the coordinates in the coordinate box using
view units, hence hiding this bug. SP3 correctly displays coordinates in
user units.
Workaround:
In view select mode, select the data view, right-mouse and select "View
projection...", click on [OK]. This resets the user units of a view to be
the same as the view units.
