[geonet]: DATABASE INDEX CORRUPT

Dear Sir or Madam,   Today when I attempted to open my gdb, (that I have spent several months on) I recieved an error message saying that the database index is corrupt and that i need to repair it.  When i attemped this it gave another error message saying that the secondary index is corupt.   What happened and why?
