David:

1. What is the difference in the Name and Label fields? How does Oasis use
them?

>> The "Name" is the name displayed when you edit the database. The "Label"
is used in a number of applications, such as for naming axes in plots, and
is generally more descriptive. For instance, the channel name may be
"AppRes", but the label would be "Apparent Resistivity", which makes more
sense when used in a graph.

2. What is the Class field? How does Oasis use it?

>> The class field is generally used to distinguish how a channel is to be
used. For instance, in CHIMERA, our geochemical module, there are channels
with the class "ASSAY" and others (usually just one, but possibly several)
with the class "MASK". There are several GX functions which allow you, for
instance, to create a list of a subset of channels, based on the class. In
CHIMERA, for instance, you are often given the option of performing a
certain operation on "All Channels", or "All ASSAY Channels". The class name
allows you to alter the name of channel without worrying about losing track
of its function -- it frees you in many cases from having to use fixed
names. "Group" lines can also be given class names, for much the same
reason.

3. When performing operations such as gridding, how does Oasis decide which
x and y fields to use assuming there are more than one of each (suitably
named, of course)?

In virtually all cases (except if you are specifically prompted) the "X" and
"Y" channels are used for locations.

4. What is the purpose of the _X, __X, _Y, and __YY fields?

These are back-up copies of the X and Y channels. Usually some operation has
been performed (such as a coordinate transformation) which has altered the
original X and Y values, so the originals are stored to _X and _Y.

Subject: [geonet]: Channel fields Name, Label, Class

When one selects a channel then does a Right Button->Edit, one sees a dialog
box with several pieces of information in it.

1. What is the difference in the Name and Label fields? How does Oasis use
them?
2. What is the Class field? How does Oasis use it?
3. When performing operations such as gridding, how does Oasis decide which
x and y fields to use assuming there are more than one of each (suitably
named, of course)?
4. What is the purpose of the _X, __X, _Y, and __YY fields?
