John and I have been sorting this out off-line.  To summarize for the
rest of you:

GM-SYS prefers to have five fields in its symbol files, corresponding to
X, Z, iflag, dip, susceptibility.  Only X and Z are (technically)
required, but X, Z, iflag is better and having dummies in two additional
columns is best, as below.

Since John's system apparently created the missing values on its own, I
consider this a bug.  In the mean time, placing dummies in the file will
prevent misbehaviour.
