Hi Colin,

This is not currently an option in the 3D Tool.

To put an opaque (or translucent) box around the bottom of your grid then would require five grids or images oriented so they connect at the corners and the four sides would need an edge that matches the relief at the edges of the top grid.

These grids could be added in version 5.1.6 with the new "Grid / Display grid / Single grid to a 3D view..." (GRIDIMG3D GX).  With this GX, additional oriented grids can be added to an existing view.  In cases where no orientation information is contained in the grid (the usual case for most grids), you can define the orientation, selecting either a plan orientation (horizontal) at a given elevation for the bottom of the box, or a section orientation (vertical) with a specified origin and azimuth for the sides.

This is probably more work than it is worth though, so I have added this idea to our Feature Request list.

Cheers,
Natalie

Subject: RE: [geonet]: 3-D contour map

Dear Ian,

I’ll try to be clearer about the effect I wish to create.  I have a 3-D plane that shows the relief that I want.  I would like to shade the vertical (x-z and y-z) planes that border my x-y max’s and min’s.  I would like the 3-D map to look like a block with 5 flat sides(bottom,N,S,E,W)  and 1 side with relief (my map side)(top).  Thank you for your help,

Colin

Colin,

If your contours look like a plane suspended in 3D, you have created a 3D plane with no relief.  When you create the 3D view of your contours provide a "Relief Surface Grid" in the "Create a new 3D View" dialog.  You would normally give the same grid as the one you contoured.  Your contour map will now appear in 3D with the contours drawn on the 3D relief surface.

If you want to add shading, you can now simply select "Grid/Display grid/Colour-shaded grid..." and choose the grid again.  This will draw the colour shaded grid onto the default plane of the current 3D view, so your contours will appear on top of a colour-filled and shaded surface.

There is more you can do, but once you have figured out how to do this, you should be able to create the effect you want.

Best,

Subject: [geonet]: 3-D contour map

I have produced a 3-D contour elevation map and wish to shade the sides so that it looks more like a surface, rather than just a plane suspended in mid-air.  Is this possible?
