Actually Jeff, you don't need to turn all the map groups off. Just select your symbols group and Map/Export the "selection" under "region to export".

A GDB would be better but I'll settle for PLY or XYZ. I can export a Group of Polygons to a PLY, but the Symbols come up blank.
