To prevent users from interpreting splined data (not measured) in spared data coverage areas. By default gridding methods skip areas of sparse data coverage. There is a parameter called "Blanking distance" that controls if a value is calculated at a point or if it is set to dummy. The default blanking distance is set relative to the gridding method. If you would like the data splined in sparse data coverage areas increase the value of this parameter. If you do so I suggest that you also indicate on your maps where the real data are located to prevent interpreting anomalies that are not real and are generated by the splining routine.
