Ian,

The recommended way to set up GeoNode in EC2 is to just install the
base system to 10.04 LTS and follow the steps here:

http://docs.geonode.org/en/latest/intro/install.html#ubuntu

After that, you can do some or all the steps in:

http://docs.geonode.org/en/latest/deploy/production.html

And create an AMI for yourself for future re-use / abuse :)

Most of the things collected in the scripts you pointed to (most of
them developed by either Jeffrey or me, or both) have been abstracted
into the GeoNode Ubuntu package and added to the docs. I would stay
away from those for the time being.

If you just want to have the instance dormant and wake it up for high
load, I would recommend to stay away from the Small ones that have
awful I/O and use either a Medium or High CPU one (64-bit).

Another thing we (David, Jeffrey, me) usually do is attach a big EBS
in /data and move postgres and geoserver's data directories to it.
Andrew Ross recently did this and he may have some notes.

About an AMI, I am guessing one will be released some time after the
1.1 release, but my recommendation to create your own still stands. It
is not too difficult, albeit time consuming.

Good luck with GeoNode on EC2, there is a good part of the GeoNode
community that uses the same infrastructure.

Ariel.
