I had a similar problem, I uploaded a shapefile but all polygons were
displayed as
points.

I could fix that by going to the geoserver http://my.geonode.tld/geoserver
going to styles and click on the style used for that layer.

then i copied the style from a 'good' polygonlayer, adjusted the name and
my polygons showed as polygons again
