But Martin even with 2D geometry can we construct quad tree and strtree indices for point geometries?

One more question is, is it at all possible to construct quadtree and 
strtree indices based on 3D point geometries? It seems you have  to 
supply the envelope of a geometry to the constructor function of both 
the indices but can you construct envelopes of points?
