Folks, Recently a few users have been asking about when new release 3.0.0 is planned. There is no date fixed yet.
I can tell the GEOS 3.0.0rc4 can be safely considered as stable. technically releasing GEOS 3.0.0 could be as easy as renaming the package, but publishing new release involves more steps than preparing a package. At the moment, there is rush around FOSS4G 2007 preparation, so it sounds reasonable IMO if GEOS will be released officially after the event. For now, please consider use of 3.0.0rc4 as GEOS stable.
