Like, really?
If you want my honest opinion, the new icons look badly on my XP box + zune theme (http://www.skattertech.com/media/2006/11/windowszunetheme.png), thought I can understand they look better in a OSX environment. But really, while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, usability is less subjective. > I appreciate > the general concern though. I guess a good principle would be "solid, > darker colors are better because most styled data will be point and > line data on a white background"? Yes and no. How do they look with a google maps satellite image in the background? That's as dark as you can find in most maps usually. What does not stand out the most is the bar used to scroll the zoom level and I have the impression it won't be too visible on most non solid backgrounds. >>> If you want to keep these icons, I'd suggest to move them >>> out of the map so that we don't have to adapt the maps >>> to the choice of colors in the navigation elements. >>> Or choose a navigation style that has very good contrast >>> no matter what's the color of the map behind it... > > So, looking at the two options: > > (1) Kick this back to designers and ask for more solid colors, or > > (2) Have the navigation elements external to the map. > > I don't have a strong opinion about which one we go with. If you move the bar outside I have no issues in keeping it as is. But from where I stand we should not release with a zoom tool that's hard to locate.
