Hi Greg,

This error is occurring b/c geoserver is being built against an older 
version of the geotools library. This is a problem with the geoserver 
pom.xml files, not your local setup.

If you are trying to build gs trunk from svn you can do an update. I 
have just committed a change to the root pom.xml which should enable you 
to grab the latest versions of the geotools libs.

You can also get around this by checking out the geotools source code 
(from svn.osgeo.org/geotools) and building it locally.
