Yeah, it does not seem to make much sense. Each process can take input data from local sources, remote sources, resources inlined in the request. There is no pre-cooked association between the layers and the processes built into WPS. One can imagine registering the result of a WPS process as a new layer, that is, as a dynamically computed thing, but I'm not seeing that happen soon (as Sextante processes are push in nature, and to have the best results out of the above approach, the nature of the processes should be pull instead).
