Hey Eduin, we've actually been chatting about this a decent bit
recently. Help translating the website and docs of GeoServer would be
really great.
Mike should sound in soon, but we're hoping to come up with some better
docs on how to translate and build up local language communities.
The path would probably be something like this:
* Translate GeoServer UI (2.0 needs all new translations, help there
would be great, though I'm not sure if we have any docs yet on how to do
it).
* Set up a mailing list (just started up
http://groups.google.com/group/geoserver-es which it looks like you've
found).
* Translate the docs. Note these are now in svn, using Sphinx, no
longer in confluence. See http://docs.geoserver.org/trunk/docguide/ We
still need to set up a structure for translations.
* Translate other parts of website.
Hopefully most everything useful should be in the docs. We still need
to make a page on 'how to translate the docs', which should include
things like which ones to focus on first, etc. And how to make
screenshots in the right language. There's a lot to translate, so we
should help guide people on the right way.
So some more 'meta' tasks remain to get in to a good place to translate,
but it'd be great if you could help out with those - figure out and
document how to translate 2.0 UI, the sphinx docs, etc.
We can probably set up the i18n plugin for confluence, but I don't think
that many pages would need it.

Mike has already tasked himself with making http://docs.geoserver.org/
support multiple languages (http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-3124)
so working on the sphinx RST docs would be great as then they can be
dropped right in.

I just want to suggest using rfc3066 LOCALE codes instead of ISO639 LANGUAGE
codes. In spanish language we have a lot of differences from country to
country. Most notably comparing spanish from Spain and spanish from
latinamerica.
A special case I can cite here is the word "File", translated as "Fichero" in
Spain and "Archivo" in LA. This is just a case but more applies to this issue.
Using locale we can have a global spanish translation "ES" and a special
variants "ES_AR", "ES_CO" and so on.

This seems like a good idea, but I would like someone who has more than zero
experience with this sort of thing to chime in with thoughts.

I think locales might be a good idea later on, but I worry doing them
right out of the gate would divide the effort too much. We've had a
hard enough time getting a critical mass of contributors around the
English docs (and those aren't regionated into American and British).
The way I see it the distinctions between Iberian and Western Spanish
aren't so great as to be insurmountable to a reader and we can always
fork the Spanish docs into regions when they are further along.

Yo he comenzado a traducir al castellano parte de la documentación a medida que
me fue haciendo falta.
Mike, la diferencia al momento de traducir la palabra "file" en "archivo" o
"fichero" es una cuestión de modismos. En cualquier caso se entendería por
cualquier habla hispano sin mayores inconvenientes. Me parece valida la
denominacion ES, para sentar una base. Luego se trabaje sobre los modismos de
las distintas variantes del castellano.
He bajado la documentación con svn a este directorio en mi pc
D:\geoserver\1.7.x\doc
y comencé a volcar mis traducciones al subdirectorio
D:\geoserver\1.7.x\doc\es
creado por mi, con la misma estructura que el \doc\ aunque no tengo la
experiencia suficiente para justificarlo a mi entender es una propuesta viable.

Well, this is going to be long to explain. I hope to be clear.
I have begun to translate into Castilian part of the documentation.
Mike, the difference when translating the word "file" to "archivo" or "fichero"
is a matter of idioms. In any case be understood by Spanish speakers without
any inconvenience. I think the name is valid, to lay a foundation. Then work on
idioms of the different variants of the Castilian.
I downloaded the svn documentation to this directory on my pc
D: \ Geoserver \ 1.7.x \ doc
and began to dump my translations subdirectory
D: \ Geoserver \ 1.7.x \ doc \ en
created by me with the same structure as the \ doc \ but I do not have enough
experience to justify it in my opinion is a viable proposition. What do you
think?
