No button is necessary, now GeoServer behaves like any other web application and persists the changes right away. I have observed no problems under Linux, I'm wondering if for any reason the data directory became read only? Do you get any error in the GeoServer logs? Or else, if the logs are read only as well, can you start GeoServer from the menu (instead of as a service) and look in the console window that appears for errors?
