I can't comment on this specific issue, but I would like to say that any error that says "This should never happen"...um...should never happen. :) I don't really know the details on how error handling works in GeoServer, so perhaps this is a way of putting a ribbon on NullPointerExceptions?
Anyway, I would much prefer (and I think others may as well) that the "This should never happen" error be changed to a bit more diplomatic: "We're sorry, but GeoServer has encountered an error that we weren't expecting." Sorry to hijack the thread... P.S. Any Sierra On-Line game fans here from way back?
