It's unfortunately difficult to help you out today. GS 1.6.x has been out of development for over a year now. Also, the MySQL extension has been mostly unmaintained for longer than one year, it's difficult to find people interested in working on it given the small set of spatial functionalities it offers. Would you be interested in helping out with the MySQL datastore for GeoServer 2.0? GS 2.0 is where all the active development is happening and we could really enjoy the help of someone that is knowledgeable and interested in using MySQL.
