Ehm, that is exaclty what I meant :-)
I would mention IRC as a why to quickly round the discussion about the
release, in case there are points to address where emails would take
too much time.
IRC should not replace anything but come into play if/when needed.

I did not see the IRC as a replacement for anything, just as an
(optional) addition.
