I think the site would be great, but I still think the site looks should respect the GeoServer branding guidelines. In short, we should respect what the PSC voted with GSIP 26: http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/GSIP+26+-+New+GeoServer+Branding and http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/GSIP+26+-+New+GeoServer+Branding So at the very least don't change anything in the GeoServer logo.
