Hi John; can you continue explaining .... When using 2.0.1 extension and GeoServer 2.0.1 *what* error occurred (you8 ended up mentioning several and I at least am confused).
I would also ask if there are any test cases for the wfs-v 2.0.1 extension which could be used to verify functionality ...
