DescribeFeatureType alaways causes 401 when layer security mode is "mixed"

mode=mixed
in the layers.properties file, DescribeFeatureType requests always result in
401 responses, even if the DescribeFeatureType request targets an unprotected
layer.
The following exception occurs:
08 Feb 10:15:33 DEBUG [ui.ExceptionTranslationFilter] - Access is denied (user
is anonymous); redirecting to authentication entry point
org.acegisecurity.AccessDeniedException: Cannot access tasmania_cities with the
current privileges
Problem observed with version 1.7.6.
