Feature properties are not updated when recreating layer

We are currently experiencing an issue where GeoServer doesn't seem to notice
changes in our PostGIS database. Our current work involves a bit of playing
around with data in the form:
* add column to database table
* fill column with some derived data
* recreate layer for the table
* use style showing the added data
* profit
The problem we encounter is that when recreating the layer GeoServer does not
seem to recognize the new columns in the database. They will not appear as
feature properties unless we restart the Tomcat instance GeoServer runs in.
That means we need to restart the server rather often since we are currently in
a phase of experimentation with the data.
