As you like, but the issue lies in the way GeoTools handles objects, hence the 
thread's name.

No. The problem is in the way weak references are hold in containers; while I 
understand the rational behind it (to GC objects even when they are still hold 
in 
a container), this way is incompatible with an external cache.

Using strong references would make Terracotta happy, but would probably mean 
memory leaks and bloated heaps for the rest of implementations... this has to 
be 
designed carefully.
