Hello Andrew, I'm sorry I couldn't find the spare time to look further into this so far. The couple times I tried I couldn't reproduce I think.
I will _try_ to find the time to check again, just can't say a fix date given the size of my todo list. Still, remember there's a number of companies providing professional geoserver support that you can hire to fix the bug for you when you need to make sure you got something done. GeoSolutions, LisaSoft and OpenGeo to name a few.
