GetCapabilities doesn't work with Internet Explorer

Making a wfs getCapabilities request in Internet Explorer (v8) from GeoServer  
build : 
Version
 2.2-SNAPSHOT

will get a prompt "Cannot Start Application - Cannot continue.  The application 
is impropertly formatted.  Contact the application vendor for assistance."
