Christy,

do you have a "stack trace" that details the origin of the error? You 
should be able to find this at the console during startup, in your 
tomcat logs, and in geoserver.log.

I strongly recommend that you persist with the tutorial and get it 
working before making changes. Does the tutorial configuration give you 
the same error?

What versions are you using?
