I have the feeling that that approach was taken before XStream supported
the readResolve() initialization.
A pattern I used sometimes for xstream classes is like this:
public class ModelObject{
public ModelObject(){
readResolve();
}
private Object readResolve(){
//initialize instance variables to default values...
return this;
}
}
