Wow yes, that seems a high value. It should not make a difference for the
JDK own PNG encoder (that you
get on Windows 64 unless you install PNGJ), but it should make the PNGJ
work more (and thus spend more time).
I'd have a look at output size vs extra time performance.

Well well... the thing is, a core i7 820 is a 4 cores CPU + hyperthreading,
so I'm not far from my phisical capacity
anyways. On your system (12 cores, yes?) it might be that the threashold is
higher.
