+1 for master. This is a well-considered idea. I am also comfortable with a backport to 2.5.x in a month or so.
-1 for 2.4.x as this is not strictly a bug and might be surprising to users who are accustomed to the old behaviour. I think we should leave maintenance well enough alone. Furthermore, there are also compatibility problems with xstream on 2.4.x, as you have identified in the GSIP. I am happy to consider argument if this change is deemed pressing. Kind regards, Ben.
