The WFSURIHandler tries to recognize DescribeFeatureType requests made to the local GeoServer. If it fails to recognize them it will make an HTTP call to itself, that results in a deadlock on the Schemas class that times out after 10 seconds (by default) causing the originating request (generally a WFS Transaction) to fail.
Hostnames for self are detected from the network interfaces and the configured proxy base url. Additional aliases can be specified as a system property. Anything not detected as being reflexive will cause the failure.
