I rather like the ArcGIS Query REST API - a few goodies OGC could adopt. One of the parameter ReturnGeometry=true/false. Theoretically you can achieve same in WFS by specifying field except SHAPE. However, spatial searches fail in say against ArcSDE if SHAPE is not a field. This is option is easy way and especially useful for Hover events returning an attrbute value from underlying geometry.
