Hi Andrea,
judging from the code in MappingFeatureIteratorFactory:
https://github.com/geotools/geotools/blob/42c4cc0c3d850b1dea50c07108f171aace35a798/modules/extension/app-schema/app-schema/src/main/java/org/geotools/data/complex/MappingFeatureIteratorFactory.java#L119
it seems that if the conditions for joining are not met, it is silently
disabled; runtime exceptions are thrown only if the conditions are not met
AND the user has explicitly enabled joining support setting
-Dapp-schema.joining=true
on the command line.
