The release is finalized and out.
The way I see it an OPTIONS request is not part of the OGC WMS protocol
(which solely relies on GET, with some extensions
allowing POST), whether it works or not seems like it should be completely
accidental, a client relying on it having a specific behavior is not
compliant.

discussing out of standard
behavior I'd also consider submitting a pull request or have someone work
one for you to restore the previous behavior.
