More importantly, GeoServer is often just "protocol glue" on top of facilities
provided by GeoTools,so to be proficient with GeoServer you first need to know
GeoTools well.Luckily, unlike GeoServer, GeoTools has a nice set of tutorials
and docs for developers (in GeoServerit's mostly "look at the code and learn"):

Once you are proficient with GeoTools you can go back to GeoServer and start
looking at doingsome bug fixing. That's actually how I got started 10 years
ago, when Chris Holmes hired me hehad me to do only bug fixing for one month
long, full time, before moving to anything else(I was already a GeoTools
developer, so that part was covered).
