It is more that it is Java 8 specific; and we now recommend using Jai-ext.
It has so many clarifications it is causing confusion, there was a recent
user list discussion about this.
I think this section should be divided up into "Java 8" and "Java 11".

To de-emphasis the JAI-EXT stuff we could link to a similar section in the
geotools manual, and present it as a choice between using JAI-EXT
(recommended) or JAI / ImageIO native libraries.
