As mentioned in a couple of meetings this summer GeoCat has been looking at migrating documentation from reStructuredText to Markdown (specifically Material for MkDocs <https://squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-material/>). Started in Bolsena the geonetwork transition is done .... by a script <http://github.com/jodygarnett/translate> which we can adapt for other projects.
I promised to report back on how it went, and yeah it is going well. In due course I will be making a proposal for GeoServer. I have made a proposal for GeoTools here https://github.com/geotools/geotools/wiki/MkDocs (to take advantage of the 30.x transition) for anyone wishing a sneak peak at what is involved. -- Jody Garnett
