This also puzzles me. There are mentions to group search in both the Authentication Provider settings form and the Role Service settings form. Maybe one of them can be used to retrieve user groups and the other one retrieves user roles? Only speculating, but I see Geoserver has the concept of both groups and roles, so that might be the cause.
