Check out the online user manual:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/data/shapefile.html

It is up-to-date with the latest version of the user interface.

Hi all,
My name is Alex and i am a beginner in Geoserver.
I am trying to set up the Geoserver 2.0.2 on my windows xp laptop in order to serve a Java application with maps. Java application uses the wms protocol in order to request maps from Geoserver for my country . Today that Java application works very well but using the OpenStreepMap server via Internet. Now I would like to have the maps locally on the laptop. So I downloaded an .osm file from OpenStreetMaps for my country and then I convert it to shape files. Then I tried to import the shape files into GeoServer. I am following a web tutorial to do that but the tutorial uses GeoServer 1.7 and GeoServer configurations windows options are different from version 2.0.2 and so, I don’t know how to configure the shape files on Geoserver. Note: I don’t want to use postgres and postgis. I do prefere to use solely Geoserver. Please, could someone explain me the steps since osm downloading till shape import in Geoserver 2.0.2 by using a real example? As I am a beginner in the GIS matters, please, provide me all the details or point me to a complete and real example on this issue.
Thank you very much.
Alex
