There is one way but you might not like it: use the application schema
data store.
Drawbacks:
* you'll have to write down your target schema manually
* you'll have to configure it writing lots of xml
* the resulting layer will be read only

For simple renaming that seems like a lot of work, so I'd personally consider
it still a wish list item to have it configurable from the GUI (without
forcing the layer into being read only).

It's doable, but requires quite a bit of work. So we're still waiting
for either some
good soul willing to do this in her spare time, or someone to fund
this improvement
