Robert,
We are currently developing a site using the OpenGeo suite on a Windows
2008 server environment. True, the installation of OpenGeo does not
allow much configuration options but we started with Geoserver and
Postgres separately so have some details to share.
PostgreSQL and Geoserver were originally installed on two separate
virtual servers. This worked perfectly well. I then installed the
OpenGeo suite (primarily for GeoExplorer) on the same virtual server as
the original Geoserver installation. Yes it installed an additional
PostgreSQL database, but through the Geoserver that was installed with
the OpenGeo suite I can point to the database on the other virtual
server. PGAdmin and shp2postgis also can see the database on the other
virtual server.
In summary, the installer is not just for testing purposes.
A suggestion also, shp2pgsql is a great tool but only allows one
shapefile at a time. the SPIT plugin on QGIS allows multiple files to be
imported to PostgreSQL.
Abe.
