I'll have to try doing a reduced set for that,
as the minimum (three mosaics) weighs in at >700MB.
I can give that a try over the weekend.

Meanwhile, I see that I failed to ask one crucial
question: is it possible to configure what colour
will be output when there is no data? I.e. when
the image mosaic cannot load a granule because there
is no TIFF file for that particular location in
the grid.

One workaround I can see is to create a TIFF file
filled with the transparent colour and for each
missing grid position create a symlink to the
transparent TIFF and a worldfile with the coordinates
but I would prefer to set the transparent colour
for missing data as per the question nabove.
