Actually it is more a security issue than virtual service. The example I 
provided had some problems because of my layer configuration. So if I take an 
example basing on the spearfish (sf) workspace, I create a new user, new role, 
set permission "read" to this user for the layer "sf:archsites" (security mode 
is mixed).

1)  The layer do not appear anymore in the getcap, what is a good thing.

2) GetMap should ask me for authentication, but it returns first an HTTP 302 
error that show the location: "http://localhost:8080/geoserver/admin/login.do";, 
then when I try to access this url to perform auth, it show an HTTP 404 error. 
Do you think this URL is wrong? Because this way I never receive an HTTP 401 to 
challenge auth.
