Dear Bill,
if the dataset is corrupted or not compliant with the JP2 Standard, you
should get a new valid copy of it.
Some notes on why geoserver allows to configure the mosaic without reporting
error:
When the images mosaic is built, all the needed information are taken from
the imageio reader which exposes them by querying the metadata boxes
composing the jp2 file (ImageHeaderBox, JP2HeaderBox, BitsPerComponentBox,
ColorSpecificationBox, ComponentMappingBox, UUIDBoxes, .... if available).
However, there is no access to the pixel data (which is contained in the
codestream).
Also note that the kakadu library itself will not return error values when
invoking its "open" method on a jp2_sources containing corrupted codestream
since it simply checks the signature box and the file-type box.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Daniele
