Ah, I see in this documentation that a layer is implicitly created when a
new datastore is added to the workspace. Tricky!

Now I have another question. The /rest/layers/layer[.<format>] url returns a
very terse set of details about the layer. Is there another trick to getting
the full information regarding the layer? For example, the spatial exents
or "publishing" information (that is viewable in the admin app)?
