Right click on the broken/pink tile, and view it in a new window or tab. 
Most likely it's actually text, an error message from the server.

I haven't played around with WMTS in OpenLayers, but typically pink 
tiles mean that OpenLayers wasn't configured correctly, wrong 
resolutions or bounds. The error message will say.
