Thanks,

The problem is not in creating a correct path to a store; but in seemingly
mis-located or mis-referenced path to the default styles folder in the
distribution. One fix seems to be, moving the styles folder from data_dir/ to
webapps/geoserver/data.

There are evidently a few routines that expect to find the default stylesheets
in the latter location even though the distribution places them in the former.

Subject: Re: [Geoserver-users] geoserver-2.02.bin: Misplaced Data Directory

Hi,

I heard similar complaints about the 'add a shapefile' tutorial last week. I
had a quick test with a shapefile that was located on another disk than
geoserver installation disk, and in this case the wizard created me correct
path to the new shapefile store. I was thinking that perhaps the problem
appears when working somewhere around the Geoserver installation or data_dir
directories but had not time to verify it.

Aihe: [Geoserver-users] geoserver-2.02.bin: Misplaced Data Directory

        Hi GeoServer Users.

I just started fooling with geoserver last night. I had a heck of a
time working through the 'add a shapefile' tutorial because it seems that with
the platform-neutral binary archive for the geoserver2.02 beta (downloaded from
sourceforge) has a bunch of resources that are located under
geoserver2.02/data_dir/ that ought to be in
gewosever2.02/webpapps/geoserver/data ..

Of course I may be confused. I discovered this problem because after
setting up the workspace, store and layer properties as instructed in the
Getting Started Tutorial, the clicking the OpenLayers preview link in the
layers list returned an xml message about a missing default_lines.sld file.
When I went to try to create a new sld, the sld creation interface returned an
error to the effect
program_Files/geosever2.02/webpapps/geoserver/data/styles/default_line.sld
could not be found. I found the styules directory under the data_dir, and
moved it and many other things that seem more like system data than user data
into the /webpapps/geoserver/data and now my preview works.

I see that the old 2.0 installer creates a file structure without a
data folder under webapps/geoserver... So I don't know whether I have hacked
this the right way, but since I can't find the place where the location of the
default styles folder should go.

Anyone have any idea what the right fix for this is?

Great stuff! I am excited to move into the world of open-source
geo-web!!!
